Cali Gilbert has a her own publishing company for aspiring authors with a message to share. She's truly an inspirational author who shares her story in her latest book, "It's Simply Serendipity.
Cali what inspired you to write your first book and tell us a little bit about it?
My first book, It's Simply Sausalito: An Inspirational Journey came about because of the year 2011. I experienced so much loss in that year (miscarried a child, lost a relationship, funds ran out, car died and I lost my home). I needed an outlet for my grieving, and the best way I express myself is through my photographs and the written word. The book became a collaboration of photographs I had taken of my hometown, Sausalito, California and inspirational phrases, lessons I had learned throughout that year.
You seem to have a calling to help empower women and I love that about you. Tell us what you're writing now?
I'm actually working on two projects, the sequel to my #1 International Bestseller, It's Simply Serendipity. I share my personal story of transformation from 2011 in this book and created a 4-step formula to manifesting. The sequel picks up the story in the Spring of 2012 and ends with my sudden move to Los Angeles in 2013. I'm really excited about this project.
I have also been working on my first novel, It's Simply Tuesday in Paris, but this book has taken on a life of its own and I'm being guided to move forward with a screenplay instead. I'm excited to see the finished product, whether in book form or on the big screen. The theme of the story is variations of love, understanding one's self.
You are also a photographer, did you take any photos for your books and do you plan to do a book on your photography?
My first four books are a combination of my writing and photography which are my two passions. I'm also working on a photography/historical book I'm hoping to release by the end of 2014 that will solely go to benefit non-profits in the Los Angeles area. I feel truly passionate about giving back and serving others, and this project is very dear to my heart.
I understand you may launch your own publishing company, are you looking for new authors now?
I am looking for new authors. I have been blessed to help publish two new authors since moving to Los Angeles and excited about supporting others. My new company will support writers in self-publishing their own books, and I have created programs to support them every step of the way from cover design, to marketing, formatting a book, to web design. Whatever the client's needs, I can guide them along the way. To learn more about Serendipity Publishing House, check out the website.
I am also about to launch a new 1-Day Writing Workshop and an online home study program for new authors.
What advice can you give to aspiring authors?
The first thing I ask any aspiring author is who is your target market? It's so easy to think everyone should buy your book, but it doesn't work that way. The next thing I ask is do you have a platform (a following)? Platform is everything for a new author.
