Relax The Back

Kelly Emberg needs no introduction, you've seen her face many times all over fashion magazines and ads. However, Kelly Emberg is so much more than just a pretty face as you will see in this interview. She is one dynamic woman with many talents and a woman I've admired for many years. Thank you Kelly for sharing a bit of your beliefs with us!

new 08

Devin: Kelly you were a natural born supermodel literally and known for your athletic body and natural beauty. Tell us how instantly becoming a supermodel was for you at such a young age?

Kelly: I really wasn't prepared for the success I ended up having as a model. Looking back, I think it was my destiny to become a model since I didn't seek it out. So when I became a success and with that I mean, when my face was on the covers of fashion magazines, it was really strange. Growing up I thought my teeth were too large, my hair was stringy, and my calves were ridiculously over developed. I don't remember feeling particularly beautiful. All of the sudden I was on the covers of magazines with a makeup contract for Cover-girl and many other prestigious clients. In New York City, the magazine stands would hang up the new covers on it's roof's edge of the shed. When the new Glamour or Vogue was out they would put that particular cover up so there was a row of the same cover. When I saw that, I wanted disappear running across the street and around the corner. I think I just didn't want to look at it because it seemed so crazy that they had picked me to be on the cover. Deep down I realized that we are all the same in the end. There wasn't anything so special about me. I was lucky in the right place at the right time. There were a group of creative professionals, the best of the best, to make me look the way I did. I never felt it was all about me because if you don't have a great photographer, great makeup and hair and of course a talented stylist, the pictures just don't turn out that great.

Devin: I admired you as a teenager and your photos inspired me to become a model. How do you maintain such a youthful look today, in other words what’s your best beauty secret?

Kelly: It isn't that big of a secret. You are what you eat. That is what I am learning now that I am in my 50's. Of course exercise and just being happy helps a lot too. Recently I started growing my own vegetables and realized that when I ate mostly a plant based diet my skin, body, attitude and energy changed and changed for the good. I am trying to drink more water too because that is another beauty secret, add a little lemon or lime to help balance your PH level. Exercise has always been something I have enjoyed and now that I am growing my own vegetables. If I miss the gym, it is usually because I am in my garden and that is a great way to exercise too.

Devin: I believe in eating organically and think what you are doing to educate and inspire others in this area is very important, tell us why you are so passionate about this.

Kelly: Great question and great topic! My passion to inspire others about their food started when I learned to grow my own food about 5 years ago. Growing changed my life. My favorite saying these days is "One Seed Can Change Your Life" and it is the truth!

These days, we are so detached from our food and where it comes from, growing my own helped me to understand this. When you plant a seed and watch it grow into a huge tomato plant which flowers and fruits and then you harvest more tomatoes than you could ever use, you start to get curious about the food you put in your mouth. You start looking at what we are doing to our planet and start to understand the difference between Organic and KellyEmbergConventionally grown. There is so much we need to understand about our food. We are the only species that eats out of enjoyment and not for the nourishment. Think about that! If we start feeding our bodies, our immune system and nervous system, with foods that it needs, our world will be healthier for it. Look at the health of people today. Process food has changed our bodies, our health . People keep eating the wrong things and take pills to take care of their illnesses and problem. Most people don't understand why they can't, sleep, loose weight or they feel so tired all the time.

Devin: I want more people to get curious about where their food comes from. What is in their food? GMO, Gluten free, local growers, pastured eggs and chickens, grass fed meat, hormone free, antibiotic free, why all the labels, what do they mean? If you have a computer and you are reading this you have the ability to start investigating what you should be eating.

Kelly: It is pretty simple. Fresh is best, the rawer the better, if you can't pronounce or don't know what the ingredients are on the label of the food product you are about to consume, you probably shouldn't be eating it. My mother recently went on a detox diet of cutting out sugar, gluten and dairy because she was at her wits end. She couldn't sleep at night and she would take sleeping pills. If she didn't sleep her stomach would bother her for days to follow. She didn't have any energy and was tired of living that way. Ten days into her new diet, all of her problems started going away. She lost weight that she had been carrying for decades and feels amazing. She gets plenty of sleep but even if she has a bad night she doesn't have the stomach problems the next day. She changed her life, you can change your life too.

Devin: You are a fellow Cancer like me, and I know you love cooking and entertaining. Is there a special dish you can share with us?

Kelly: I just uploaded "A Simple Salsa" video on my YouTube channel "The Model Gardener" so I am going to go with that one. I decided to start shooting videos on "Simply Growing" and "Simply Cooking" because when you grow you will need simple recipes to make delicious dishes with your harvest. My friend Ester, gave me this recipe and of course, I added my little flare as we all do with recipes that are so graciously handed down to us.

Here it is:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 tomatoes - I like heirloom variety but any juicy tomato will work. Avoid Roma or plum, they are better for pasta sauce.
  • 1 - 3 jalapeños or any kind of chili pepper. Depending how spicy you would like your salsa.
  • 2 - cloves of garlic
  • salt and pepper.

Cut your tomatoes and lay them skin side down in a large skillet. In another small skillet, put your whole chili peppers in it. Place both skillets on medium heat for a few minutes. Constantly turn your peppers over with tongs and blacken all sides. Check your tomatoes and see if the skins of the tomatoes are starting to brown. Once the peppers and tomatoes are blackened take it off the heat. Peal the 2 garlic cloves and chop in your food processor or blender. Remove the stems of the peppers and add the blackened chilies to the food processor and chop that up. Lastly add the blackened tomatoes, salt and pepper and chop that up. Take the pan that was used for the blackened tomatoes and add a little water to the pan. Heat it up to loosen any blackened tomato residue, once the pan is clean, add the juice to the salsa and blend it up one more time. Wha-la, it is done. Chill and serve. Trust me, you will love this if you decide to try it.

Devin: You have had so many amazing careers, model, interior designer and now food expert, what would you most like to be remembered for?KellyEmberg-2

Kelly: Helping people. Change the world, One Seed at a time. My dream is to help people Simply Understand their Food! If I can plant a seed and inspire one person then they can inspire their friends and family and so on and so on. That is all it takes! I want people to take back their health and live long, happy lives, that's it.

Devin: I believe spiritual growth is important for the soul like proper nourishment is for the body and women who are beautiful inside and out don't seem to age and you seem to be one of these women. Is there anything profound that has happened in your life that you'd like to share with other women?

Kelly: When I work at something I work hard at it. When I look back at the chapters of my life starting with trying out for cheerleader, to becoming a model, interior designer, motherhood and my desire to change the world, I realize nothing comes without effort. But when you are putting effort into something you believe in so strongly about, the effort you put into it is so much fun.! It is the journey that makes life so great! Find what you are passionate about, believe you can do it, march forward and listen to your heart and intuition along the way. Never give up on your dream. If I can do it you can!
