Rhonda Shear made a name for herself with her "Up All Night" show in the 1980s, but she's now got a flair for fashion with a very intimate style.
Rhonda you are from my home state of Louisiana and you were Miss Louisiana; do you enjoy cooking like me?
Absolutely! I never cooked much until I got married and I have fallen in love with cooking since then. My hubby Van is a Louisiana boy and great cook… I’m competitive (ever since my pageant days)… so of course I had to start cooking too! Love making my own roux, gumbo, remoulade, creole, and throwing crayfish broils with friends. Yum!
Many fans remember you from your USA network “Up All Night” show where you critiqued B-movies, what are some of your most memorable moments from doing that?
I loved staying UP all night with my fans for over 450 episodes of USA: Up All Night! I have so many great memories and there plenty of crazy moments & characters on the show…. Pretty sure I got a generation through puberty! I think my favorite moments were meeting amazing talent on the show from comedians and singers, to athletes and actors, we really had some incredible people working on the show! I was one of the first people to host a show from the Playboy Mansion which was so fun… and still is! What’s more fun than hanging with Playmates and B-movie stars?
Congratulations on your new “Shear Intimates” line for HSN that you created with your husband, what new products are you adding to that line?
Thank you! It has been a wild ride and I am so thrilled to be helping women find comfort in their intimates through my line Ahh by Rhonda Shear. I also have some exciting collaboration lines launching this year-a sleep/loungewear line with Crystal Hefner, and another with Kato Kaelin called Kato Potato. I went from hosting in my skivvies to creating them, and I am truly loving every minute. Speaking of your husband, I found your love story quite inspirational please tell us how you reconnected with your high school sweetheart?
Van and I were Jr. High sweethearts, he was my first love and the only boy who ever broke my heart. We broke up in Highschool and I ended up going out to LA (for the summer but I stayed for 26 years)and Van got married and settled down in Louisiana. One day out of the blue, he contacted me through classmates.com and we started emailing back and forth. He was recently divorced and I was touring as a comedienne. I went to Louisiana to visit my family that Christmas and thought it would be fun to meet up with the first guy I ever kissed… 15 days later we were married! We decided to make up for lost time and together we launched Shear Enterprises, LLC and we have been partners in life and business since!
You also do quite a bit of charity work and speaking engagements to empower women, which I love and admire. Please tell us where we can see you next?
I am involved in several charities and women’s groups and hope to continue to empower and support women any way I can- so important to give back! It is just amazing to see women come together and build things together, and I have had the honor to speak in front of some great groups especially after winning Ernst & Young as Entrepreneur of the year in Florida. I am still learning every day and have found so much inspiration from the incredible women in my life. Follow me on social media for the latest upcoming appearances! A few organizations in particular that I work with include : All Children’s Hospital, Pace School for Girls, American Heart Association: Go Red for Women, ACS: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Dress for Success, and many more! I encourage women to find groups and ways to help in their communities- Girls have to stick together!
