Teresa Delquist is known for her show, "The Three Golden Sisters" that was on the OWN network. She shares her unique wisdom here with us.
Teresa it's amazing what you have done in your life and in your multiple careers. I am simply inspired and in awe to learn your wisdom, something Oprah spotted and said to you also. This lead to your show on OWN, "The Three Golden Sisters" that you starred with your own sisters, including an identical twin. How has this changed your life?
A new career in my 70's??? A series regular on OWN. How did that happen? That's kind of been my history. I've had several different careers in my lifetime. But I really thought I was done. My life has changed is ways I never knew were possible. We get recognized. Stranger tells us they love us. People tell us we're awesome??? I was never called awesome in all my life. Our producers, cameramen, and makeup artists treat us royally. We are asked to go on talk shows. We are getting more attention that we have ever gotten in all our lives.
You and your sisters are regular guests on my favorite talk show, "The Queen Latifah" show and do all sorts of funny things that most people don't expect women your age to be doing. What are some of the craziest things you guys have done?
We milked a cow. I got a tattoo, we drove a low-rider. We scetched a nude man.
Josie, I jumped in a pool on a dare and I didn't know how to swim.
Mary, I took a typing test when I was trying to get into the telephone company and never took a typing class. I failed the test.
Teresa, I flew in a plane to catalina and didn't know the pilot was in-experienced.
You were also a Hollywood agent responsible for some quite successful careers. What advice did you give your clients towards the road to success?
I loved being an agent and developing talent and watching them flourish. My claim to fame was guiding Shia LaBeouf's career. He called me on the phone when he was 11 years old and said, I need an Agent. He was focused, and listened to my advice. Of course his talent was way over the top. My advice is do the work, take classes, be focused, find a mentor, read all the books by actors and take their advice. Do community theater. Make friends in the business and help each other find work.
What would you most like to be remembered for, given you have achieve so much in your life?
I would love to be remember by the people, that even for one moment, I made laugh, and helped turn their lives around. I recently met a girl that used to work for me many years ago. And she said, "I remember you laughing all the time, and that made me laugh more often." Another one said, I was so depressed and you made me look at my problem in a different light. Thank you for that. I would like to be remember by a phrase I coined years ago, "Never feel cheated, only feel generous. When you feel cheated your face is sad, when you feel generous your face is happy."
What tips can you give women that they may not realize is important?
I learned three words that helped me in my life endeavors. DO IT NOW. Two more, FINISH IT. I think the best advise I could give mothers is to play with your children more often. Try and stay married to the father of your children. Children need and want a Dad in the home. If that's not possible, love their step-mother. It's tough on both sides. There are no problems only solutions. See the beauty around you and constantly say thank you. I usually make a joke, "You learn most about life in Kindergarten, Say Please, Thank you and share.
